Higher Education Expands in Miramar
The much anticipated Miramar Branch Library and Education Center is set to open its doors in Fall 2008. Located within the Miramar Town Center at 2050 Civic Center Place, the 72,000 square foot three-story building will include a 30,000 square foot Broward County Branch Library on the first floor and 42,000 square feet on the second and third floors for use by Broward College (BC) and Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Each school will be offering a wide variety of credit and non-credit courses for adults of all ages.

Mayor Lori C. Moseley enthusiastically expressed that “not only are we making history in Miramar by working together with the County to open our very first stand-alone library, we are also partnering with two great educational institutions”. The Miramar Branch Library and Education Center is an integral part of Miramar Town Center - where you can learn, work, live, dine, shop and be entertained without ever leaving the area.

NSU will be starting off its Miramar operations with programs offered by NSU’s Fischler School of Education & Human Services and the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business & Entrepreneurship. The flag bearer for the Miramar start-up will be the Fischler School with over 80 students already enrolled in its Master of Science in Education and Educational Specialist programs. Shortly following, the Master of Science in Instructional Design and Diversity Education program will be offered.

Entrepreneurship and Executive Education will be offering its Executive Education programs geared towards the successful handling of business challenges and enhancing professional development. Strategic planning and discussions for adding the other programs are in progress, ensuring that the needs of the Miramar community will be properly met and that the service and all support systems will be ‘student ready’. These include electronically equipped classrooms, state-of-the-art computer lab and student services facilities - all designed to accommodate day, evening and weekend classes. Formerly known as Broward Community College, Broward College will occupy the second floor of the Broward County Library. The center will offer several general education courses that lead to an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree. The Miramar Center will also be the home of the highly anticipated Associate in Science degree in Air Traffic Control (ATC). The new facility will house the latest air traffic simulation control equipment for both radar and tower control. Broward College will accept 20 students to start the new ATC aviation program in the fall and then add more students each semester thereafter. The capacity of the program will be 100 full-time students. Over the next decade, approximately 72 percent of the air traffic control workforce will retire and Broward College will be meeting the challenge of the needs in this industry.
